BW Offshore Gains OT Detection & Security with Claroty

About

BW Offshore engineers innovative floating production solutions. The Company has a fleet of 11 FPSOs with potential and ambition to grow. By leveraging four decades of offshore operations and project execution, the Company creates tailored offshore energy solutions for evolving markets world-wide. BW Offshore has around 2,000 employees and is publicly listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

BW Offshore provides its clients with purpose-built floating production solutions, allowing operators in the oil and gas industry to safely access resources in remote locations far out at sea. The security of the operational technology (OT) environments on board these floating production storage and offloading units (FPSOs) is critical both to the people stationed on the FPSOs and to the economic interests of BW Offshore’s clients. With a fleet of 11 vessels all over the world, BW Offshore needed a solution to enable them to achieve compliance with security regulations while gaining continuous remote visibility, security, and control over its OT environments.

“Clearly this is something that works, and it brings value to us to see where we are exposed.”

Enrico Piccini, Discipline Manager, Instrument & Telecom

One of the most important FPSO units in BW Offshore’s fleet, BW Catcher, is deployed roughly 100km east of Aberdeen, Scotland. This unit’s remote location in the North Sea created new challenges, and BW Offshore partnered with Claroty to resolve them:

  • Compliance with aspects of the EU’s NIS Directive

  • Receive alerts on any abnormal activity in BW Catcher’s OT environment

  • Receive timely, automatic updates on the latest vulnerabilities and risks

  • Create a baseline for traffic in the OT environment, in order to highlight any deviations that could represent an issue

BW Offshore leveraged Claroty’s Continuous Threat Detection (CTD) solution to help address the need for compliance with the NIS Directive while gaining continuous remote visibility, security, and control for every device in BW Catcher’s OT environment.

Continuous Threat Detection at Sea

With CTD, BW Offshore has live monitoring and security for all of their OT environments in one place. The detection capabilities and visualization of the environment give BW Offshore unprecedented visibility and control of OT, while automated updating and documentation of the latest vulnerabilities allows BW Offshore to hold their OT vendors accountable for timely mitigation of existing risks. Claroty’s world-class research and customer success teams worked together with BW Offshore to ensure even the trickiest of protocols in its OT environments are covered.

“We’re getting information on activities that we would never be able to detect previously, even the people offshore. You immediately start getting alerts, so this is very impressive.”

Enrico Piccini, Discipline Manager, Instrument & Telecom
